Debre Berhan University organized field day on malt barley production at DBU farm demonstration site in collaboration with Habesha Breweries S.C on 1st November, 2019 G.C.
Welcoming the participants Dr. Almaz Afera, Vice President for Research and Community Service, said that Debere Berhan University has been undergoing activities like adaptation of malt barley, and distributing chickens. The field day was organized to help farmers to share the experiences and to produce for industries input. She added that DBU has been working in collaboration with Habesha Breweries S.C to change the communities’ life.
The participants were from Oromia Regional State of Fiche,Abichuna-Gnea,Kinbibit woredas and from Amhara Regional State of North Shoa Zone of Basona-Worena,Chacha ,Debre Berhan Zuria woredas barely growing farmers, agriculture bureau officers and other concerned bodies. Selale University delegates were participated to get experience from DBU.
On the field visit Ato Temesgen Kebede from DBU and Ato Demis from HBF told that the adaptation was made on 6.53 hectare land and they were used 10 quintal malt barely seed namely traveler variety and 1 quintal NPSB and 1.5 quintal Urea fertilizer per hectare. Seven liter Axial anti weed chemical used for the first time.
Ato Mesfin Tefera, Habesha Breweries S.C/HBF/ Sustainable Development manager, disclosed that Habesha Breweries S.C plans to substitute the imported malt barely with the local produce and that is why the company financing such kind of projects. The farmers will grow this variety to their farmland and sell to the factory so as to earn better income. The factory also will create job opportunity to youths who are interested to take part on such fields.
Finally, discussions were made. On the closing remark Mrs.Omo O., Operation Director for HBF, said that their company main objective is to improve the wellbeing of the farmers in which it is founded.
