The goal of the joint study programs is to increase the number of competent health professionals and researchers at different levels. This helps staff of partners institutes an opportunity to benefit from high-quality study programs at other Universities/institutes and gain professional work experience. The quality of research at AWHSC is a key factor for successful collaboration and partnership. Through national or international partnerships, competitiveness in research is increased, which will lead to greater capacity to obtain external funding as well as to improve health care services. We believe that active collaboration creates a competitive advantage for the campus, staff, and students for the benefit of society through research. The program aims to create long, and short-term study visit opportunities for students and staff of partner Universities/institutes and AWHSC. Our hospital is an excellent clinical attachment site for international exchange students as it has high patient flow, advanced diagnostic services, and diverse clinical cases. All exchange staff and students are guaranteed the campus housing service.
Hakim Gizaw Hospital that operates under AWHSC provides outpatient, emergency, and inpatient clinical services including both general and specialty cases. Clinical service requires collaboration among research institutes, individuals, diagnostic centers, academia, and researchers working at various levels. Therefore, we welcome research institutes/hospitals/ universities/individuals to collaborate with us on the following ser vices and/or support to improve patients’ health outcomes.
The majority of the research is clinical and patient oriented. It includes studies of common diseases of relevance to low- and middle-income countries, including pathogenesis, genomic epidemiology, treatments as well as functional and molecular aspects of antimicrobial resistance. The main research areas include but are not limited to Tuberculosis, Meningitis, Malaria, Hepatitis, HIV, Zoonotic Disease, COVID-19, Neglected Tropical Diseases, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Infection Prevention & Control.
Our focus areas are cancer (leukemia, cervical cancer, lung cancer & breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, epigenetics of NCD, mental health & rehabilitative services.
The research is mostly focused on Food Safety & Hygiene and National Nutrition Policy & Program. The researchers have various professions such as nutritionists, biomedical scientists, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians.
Knowledge about public health and the factors that affect it due to climate change is standardized and measures to maintain and enhance human health. Research under this theme focuses on climate change & disease burden, water pollution, indoor air pollution, and occupational health & safety.
The aim of the theme is to improve women’s, neonatal & child health through research. We are also actively working to implement targeted point of care testing capacity of sexually transmitted infections.
Research under this theme falls within four focus areas: drug & vaccine discovery, diagnostic tool development, clinical trials, and traditional medicine practice. Our researchers have made significant contributions to the university phase I clinical trial project on the evaluation of Rosmarinus officinalis, Thymus schmperi and Eucaliptus globulus. The aim of this project is to develop herbal product formulations that will give new and effective alternatives to treat dermatological disorders. The researchers under this theme include pharmacologists, microbiologists, physicians, and nurses.
