About Debre Berhan University (DBU)
Debre Berhan University (DBU) is a public higher-educational institution. It is one of the second generation universities established in 2007 G.C (1999 E.C.) at Debre Berhan town. It was established in the 600 years old historical place Debre Berhan town which is located in Amhara National Regional State of North Shoa Administrative Zone 130 km far from Addis Ababa –the capital of Ethiopia.
Indeed It is founded by the
Government of Ethiopia to expand equitable access to higher education and
support national development. Since its foundation, the university has grown into
a multidisciplinary research and teaching
institution serving thousands of students across undergraduate and postgraduate
levels. The motto emphasizes the institution's focus on academic, research, and
community oriented endeavors that lead to tangible improvements and success for
its students, staff, and the broader community.
Since
its establishment, DBU has been contributing a lot for the nearby community in
particular and the region as well as the country in general. When it started
the teaching learning process, there were only 725 students in one faculty,
i.e., Faculty of Education, with 68 instructors and 7 administrative staff. Currently,
there are above 12920 students in the regular, extension, summer, and distance
programs. In addition, the University has been delivering trainings based on
the new education road map and differentiation as of September, 2019 G.C.
Debre Berhan University, in addition to the
academic programs being offered on its main campus, has started providing
training in two new campuses, namely Asrat Woldeyes Health Science Campus
located in Debre Berhan City Administration and Mehal-Meda campus that is Highland
Agriculture and Tourism Research has begun teaching learning process in 2017
E.C .Hakim Gizaw Memorial Teaching Hospital has also started carrying out its
duty with modern technologies and facilities which enhance the medication
process and treatment of patients. Besides this Minilik II Technology Institute
is under construction.
Currently DBU is differentiated as an Applied Science
Universities since 2020. Universities of Applied Sciences offer Bachelor and
Master Degree programs that reflect a direct link to the professional field and
have a firm element of job-oriented development in their curriculum.
Universities of Applied Science’s education concept is based on the principle
that a student should be highly employable after graduation, or indeed able to
employ themselves especially through understanding the basic principles of
operation and management within the industry field that they have studied for.
At present, the university is staffed with 1415 academic staff (274 of them are on study leave) ,1639 administrative staffs including technical workers. DBU will also continue its endeavor to strengthen its partnership with local , regional, national and international stakeholders to achieve its vision.
